The Surgical Education Center (SEC) was established in 2003, as a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to providing the highest quality surgical education and facilitating cutting-edge research in service to UCI faculty, residents, medical students and allied health professionals, including pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device companies as well as community surgeons. This center is utilized for educational surgical hands-on courses, translational and in-vivo studies, product development and prototype device testing, company sales team training, and community outreach. The Surgical Education Center has been continuously certified as a Level I Education Center by the American College of Surgeons since 2003. Indeed, it was among the first group of Education Centers across the country to be so designated.
Located in Southern California in the city of Orange, the Surgical Education Center is housed within Edward Shanbrom Hall on the UC Irvine Health Medical Center campus. This center has over 15,000 square feet, including:
- A surgical skills laboratory suite where surgical education and research are conducted.
- A simulation laboratory suite where simulation training technology can be applied to learning new techniques and procedures.
- Multiple conference rooms to accommodate small as well as large (up to 50 participants) group learning.
