Tuition and Eligibility

Summer Surgery Program (Session I or II, 2-Weeks)

Cost: $5,500 per student

Summer Surgery Program Tuition (Session I and Session II) includes:

All course materials, use of facilities for surgical skills training labs, laboratory training facilities and staff, OR training and observer certification, access to operating room, use of patient simulation center, ultrasound course, fetal pig dissection course, CPR training and BLS certification, breakfast, lunch, and in-between snacks served each day, daily parking, Summer Surgery Program-embroidered white coats, hospital scrubs, program t-shirt, and notebook. Also included is a weekend team bonding activity during the student participants respective Summer Surgery session.

Session I and Session II Housing and Transportation: On Own

*Students whose parents are employed by the University of California, Irvine, will receive a 10% discount.

Better Than Live Summer Surgery (1-Week)

Cost: $2,350 per student

Better Than Live Summer Surgery Tuition includes:

All course materials, use of facilities for surgical skills training labs, laboratory training facilities and staff, use of patient simulation center, ultrasound course, fetal pig dissection course, CPR training and BLS certification, breakfast, lunch, and in-between snacks served each day, daily parking, program t-shirt, and notebook.

Better Than Live Summer Surgery Housing and Transportation: On own

*Students whose parents are employed by the University of California, Irvine, will receive a 10% discount.

Scholarships

The Summer Surgery Program (Sessions I and Session II) and the Better Than Live Summer Surgery Program is offering up to six fully paid scholarships to qualified applicants. Any applicant is eligible; however, preference is given to those demonstrating greatness need. Consideration will also be given to those who will contribute most to the program with their maturity and life experience.

To be considered for a fully paid scholarship, please submit the following items on or before the scholarship deadline.

  • Complete and submit the Scholarship Application
  • One letter of recommendation from a teacher, mentor or academic advisor
  • Parent/Guardian’s 2023 tax form

The following items are considered during the scholarship selection process:

  • Degree of financial need/hardship
  • An applicant who is the first generation to attend college.
  • An applicant that demonstrates maturity through experience
  • An applicant that demonstrates motivation to contribute positively to society.

Who is Eligible?

UC Irvine’s Summer Surgery Program is open to high school student who:

  • Are 16 years of age or older*
  • Have a 3.5 GPA (unweighted) or above
  • Are respectful and mature
  • Complete all required application and registration forms in a timely manner

Each applicant must first meet minimum criteria for age and academic standing prior to applying. The applicant must turn 16 years old on or before the start date of their program session to be eligible to attend. All applications will be reviewed, and interviews will be held to assess personal maturity and motivation for a career in medicine and desire to innovate! Students are evaluated based on their academic performance, diversity of experiences and background, essay quality, recommendation letter, and commitment to succeeding in the program.

The opportunity to observe live surgery is a privilege that we take very seriously, and we kindly ask that our Summer Surgeons keep this in mind when applying.
