Professional Biography

Dr. Michael Louie joined the Department of Urology at UC Irvine in April 2009 after completing a two year fellowship in advanced endourology, laparoscopy, and robotic surgery at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center under the mentorship of Dr. Ralph Clayman, Dr. Elspeth McDougall, and Dr. Thomas Ahlering. During his residency at Ohio State University, Dr. Louie received training in all aspects of urological care, but found a particular interest in minimally invasive surgery for both cancer and benign disease of the urinary tract. He began his robotic surgery training in 2005 with mentoring from Dr. Vipul Patel, a pioneer in robotic prostatectomy. Dr. Louie has particular interest robotic surgery for the prostate, kidney, ureteral, bladder, and stone disease. With a foundation in traditional open surgery, Dr. Louie is able to apply his expertise in endourologic, percutaneous, laparoscopic, and robotic techniques to many urological diseases.

Dr. Louie's clinical research has focused on clinical outcomes from minimally invasive surgical techniques as well as clinical trials for novel therapies for stone disease procedures. He has authored several book chapters and has publications that have been accepted or are forthcoming in peer reviewed journals. His laboratory research has focused on studying renal and ureteral physiology, comparing hemostatic agents for partial nephrectomy, examining energy based sealing devices for the ureters and blood vessels, and investigating the feasibility of laparoendoscopic single site surgery (LESSS) and natural orifice translumenal surgery (NOTES).

He is an active member of the American Urological Association, the Endourology Society, and the Engineering and Urology Society.
